Here is another spectacular darning sampler from the same source as the 1874 darning sampler in my possession ... The perfection in stitches makes me wonder ... Were they stitched by the same talented young lady? Probably not ... Names are different.
A good way to identify the source of a sampler, as I learn, is the names stitched on them. But speaking non of the languages - Dutch or German, I could have never guessed their origin if I had not known that they arrived from Germany.
These pictures below are high resolution. Please click on them to observe the amazing details!
Look how perfectly the mending blends into the unity of the pattern ... Fascinating!

Such eagle eyes this lady had!!! I am pure envy!! My eyes are so tired!!! Amazing work almost invisible!!! Great acquisition
The first picture of the darning, looks very much like a Japanese darning technique called kogin. There are couple of examples on my blog, see http://borduurblog.blogspot.com/search/label/kogin .
Indeed it does dear Miriam. However, just the looks. Kogin is running stitches as I understand but this one is woven. I think you call them stoplap in Holland. I just go wild about them :) Stunning!
autrefois, les dames savaient réparer les accrocs et déchirures. Aujourd'hui nous jetons et remplaçons. Quel dommage que nous ayons perdu ce savoir faire !
Pelin, this seems to be a german darning sampler.Kraus is a german patronym . The signature tell me that the girl who made this sampler did this work around 1941. The scripture in Germany changed in 1941 and the signature is a mix from the old and the new one.
My mothertongue is german, if you need help someday, just remember.
My mom learnt me to darn and I loved it. I have still some old linen sheets and dish towels which she has mended.
Sorry, I have to correct... Shame on me. :-((
"The signature TELLS" and "My mom TEACHED me.
